What's in a name?

  • Dec. 1st, 2009 at 3:52 PM
If you were given a free token to change your LJ username, what would you change it to (you HAVE to change it, even if just by a little bit)?

You can change it to any username, no matter if it's still in use or otherwise not available, provided it's within the 15-character limit. As usual, only hyphens/underscores are allowed as far as special characters go.

You can have great wealth for the rest of your life. Think $1,000,000 a year for each year of life. But...in exchange for this wealth, you'll lose 7 years of your life. You'll die 7 years sooner than you would have died normally and nothing can change that. Do you still want the money?

You can live an extra 20 years longer than your particular life expectancy would ordinarily dictate. Say, if you were supposed to die at the age of 80, it's now been postponed to 100. But in exchange, you'll spend the rest of your life below the poverty level. You'll never seem to break even. It'll feel like you've been cursed, which you have been, but you'll live 2 extra decades as your compensation. Want the extra 20 years?

Edit: For question 2, you really have no idea how long you'll live. Say you're supposed to die at 40. You can extend that to 60

very specific

hey guys
this is a super specific question so stick with me!
We have some family friends that are my parents age with children my age (daughter and son). The Daughter is married. The parents, the daughter, her husband, and the parent's son all live in the same house. The parents and the son have the same last name, the daughter's last name is hyphenated, and the husband's last name is different (obv.)
so it's like this:

John Doe (age 56)
Jane Doe (age 55)
Sean Doe (age 20)
Emma Doe-Smith (age 26)
and
Ralph Smith (age 28)

Is that how I address it (that order?)?
Does the John and Jane's son (who is younger than Emma) go before her?
Do I put Emma's name before her husbands since she is the daughter of John and Jane and he is not biologically their son?
Do I put Emma's husband's name first because he is her husband?
Do I put both of them before Sean even though he is a part of the parent's family?

OH MY GOSH am i CRAZY? should i just write
"the Doe, Doe-Smith, and Smith families"?!?! ON ONE INVITATION?
i feel like there is a simple answer and i am just having a moment. Please help!
ahhhhh.
I dont want to send two invitations.

thanks so much for any help you can offer!
love natalie

Winter clothes/shoes

  • Dec. 1st, 2009 at 12:48 AM
I visit my boyfriend in Canada often and there is (obviously) a lot of snow there during the winter. Since my usual flats and rip off ugg-like boots won't cut it, I'm wondering what are some more reliable, cute boots that I could wear while I'm there? What do you people (who are from snowy climates) wear?

Also, on the same note (kind of) my boyfriend works at a funeral home - therefore he wears a suit to work everyday along with a button up dress shirt. During the winter months (being in Canada) it gets pretty cold. What are some items that I can buy for him that he could wear under his suit? Are thermal shirts/pants my only option? I was hoping for something a bit thinner/less noticeable but still with the ability to keep him warm!

Thanks in advance - any help is truly appreciated :)

How'd you meet your fiance?: I was good friends with his best friend who tried to date me for a long time when I finally introduced him to one of my friends to get him off my case. They ended up getting married in January. He wanted to do me a favor and introduce me to his best friend since I set him up. I was kind of sketchy about it at the time because he has some weird friends. Well, I spent the night at his friend's house because we were supposed to go hunting the next day. Well, of course the alarm doesn't go off and the man of my dreams catches me in my smiley face bright yellow panties and tank top sleeping. Needless to say I was embarrassed. One thing led to another and now we're engaged!
How long have you been together?: Since July 2008
Do you have a personal wedding website?: it's in the works
Have you read the community rules before posting this survey? yes!
Anything else you'd like to tell us?: I'm freaking out about planning the wedding, but let me show you the ideas for dresses I have in mind and some other stuff too!

Flannel

  • Dec. 1st, 2009 at 12:25 AM
I'm looking for old fashioned (ie no grommets, jewels, etc) boys' style flannel shirts. Something like this but (hopefully) a bit cheaper than LL Bean's pricing. If not, perhaps with a bit more variety. [I am trying to pinch pennies, but two of my multi-times second hand flannel shirts have gone missing and I can't imagine living the winter without my men's style flannel - except I'm tiny so I'm aiming for boys's style.)

Thoughts on ELF? I'm eying their $3 lip stain (I prefer lip stain for long retail hours and $3 sounds just too good to be true. Also, any reviews of their eyeliner? Normally, I just leave the house with a bit of liner, some stain if I'm feeling femme and dressy.)

Additionally, what are your favorite hand warmers? Mine getting old and I figure treating myself to a fresh pair would be a nice holiday gift.

Sephora.com order question

  • Nov. 30th, 2009 at 9:25 PM
Does anyone know if Sephora will do anything for a damaged item ordered from their website other than require me to send it back? I ordered a LAVANILA perfume gift set from them and one of the bottles leaked all over everything in the package; the packaging for the perfume set itself (which was going to be a gift) is destroyed, the return shipping lables are smudged and soaked with perfume, the free bonus clutch I received and the samples smell so strongly that I won't be able to use them, and the bottle that leaked is now empty. I will be home to send it back to them but no one is going to be at my house during the time they would be sending it back, and the earliest I would probably be able to be there to receive the package is in January, when I'm sure they will be out of the clutches. Having a neighbor receive it is not an option for me, because I don't really know any of my neighbors. :(

I did send them an e-mail about the situation, but I am annoyed because this is the second Sephora.com order that has let me down. My last order included an empty perfume sample and two potted eyeshadows with pans that were not glued in (no glue at all!) so they were just rumbling around loose in their pots. It's a miracle they didn't shatter in transit.

Thanks in advance!

ETA: After actually taking the empty bottle out of the box it looks like it was taken out, opened, and not closed all the way. I say this because I found a long black hair wrapped around the neck of the bottle, under the lid. Gross!

Married woman over here!

  • Dec. 1st, 2009 at 12:24 AM
I got married on Black Friday in Cape Coral Florida, and because our photographer is supremely awesome and wonderful (not to mention super talented!), we already have about 50 sneak peek photos. I'm too excited and I just have to share. Our wedding day turned out to be everything we wanted, and the weather was absolutely amazing. I couldn't have asked for more.

And here we go... )

Would you drink a cup of ipecac for 500 dollars? What about a shot? Inspired by a video my boyfriend is watching.

Alternatively, will you show me a sweater you like?
